Frieze Masters
October 04 - October 06, 2019
On the occasion of Marlborough’s first presentation at Frieze Masters as a consolidated program in New York and London, we are pleased to propose a group presentation of portrait paintings by US and UK artists. Most of the artists have worked with the gallery in different capacities over the last 50 years in New York and or London.
While the works engage different art historical contexts, manifold styles and strategies in representational painting the exhibition focuses on the intense, intimate personal relationship of artist and sitter, and the shifting power dynamic inherent therein. The paintings are carefully selected to shed light on the specific sitters and emphasize the profound impact these subjects have had on their painters.
